Orthodontic Mini-Implants: Diagnosis, Biomechanics and Clinical Application

On August 1–2, we delivered a comprehensive orthodontic mini-implant course covering diagnosis, anatomy, biomechanics, device selection, placement techniques and clinical applications, followed by hands-on practice using dental models.

On August 1–2, together with Dr. Alex Zambrano and ACOE, we conducted an intensive course on orthodontic mini-implants focused on understanding skeletal anchorage from diagnosis to clinical application.
Participants learned how to identify the need for skeletal anchorage, assess the anatomy of the insertion site and select the appropriate location, mini-implant design, force and biomechanical vector for each treatment objective. We also reviewed titanium and stainless-steel mini-implants, including their designs, dimensions, available brands and clinical selection criteria.
Clinical applications included midline correction, space opening and closure, molar intrusion, distalization, mesialization, control of dental inclination and the management of complex orthodontic movements. Diagnostic and clinical principles related to MARPE and SARPE expansion protocols were also discussed.
The course concluded with a hands-on session using dental models. Participants practiced and compared placement techniques in the Buccal Shelf, IZC, PV Zone, interradicular and palatal regions, integrating anatomical considerations, primary stability, insertion direction and biomechanical planning.
This comprehensive academic experience reinforced that successful mini-implant treatment begins with an accurate diagnosis, detailed anatomical knowledge and a properly planned biomechanical system.
